Archaeolegydd a gwas sifil oedd John Richard Avent (13 Gorffennaf, 1948 – 2 Awst, 2006). Cafodd ei eni yn Cookham a graddiodd yng Ngholeg Prifysgol Caerdydd yn 1970. Treuliodd gyfnod fel Arolygydd Henebion i'r Swyddfa Gymreig ac yn 1984 daeth yn brif arolygwr Cadw. Bu'n gymrawd o Gymdeithas Hynafiaethau Cymru yn 1979 a daeth yn Llywydd Cymdeithas Archaeolegol Cambria yn 2006. Bu farw ynghyd â'i fab Rhydian mewn damwain nofio ger ynys Gozo, Malta.Ymhlith ei gyhoeddiadau mae Cestyll Tywysogion Gwynedd (Caerdydd, 1983).
