The book was released on September 27, 2011, and is the first of the Killing series of popular history books by O'Reilly and Dugard. O'Reilly indicated in a USA Today interview that his coauthor Martin Dugard has written several history books. O'Reilly himself graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Marist College in 1971 as well as a master's degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University and master's degree in public administration from Harvard University.
