Beijing Normal University (BNU, simplified Chinese: 北京师范大学; traditional Chinese: 北京師範大學; pinyin: Běijīng Shīfàn Dàxué), colloquially known as Beishida (北师大), is a public research university located in Beijing, China, with a strong emphasis on arts and sciences. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China as part of Project 985 and Project 211, and was designated by the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Class A Double First Class University. BNU is ranked No.1 among Chinese universities in the subject of Education according to the most recent QS World University Rankings, Academic Ranking of World Universities, and University Ranking by Academic Performance.The name "normal school" refers to an institution that aimed to train schoolteachers in the early 20th century. This terminology is preserved in the names of such institutions in China even after these schools later developed into comprehensive universities. It also reflects BNU's heritage as a former unit of the Faculty of Education in the Imperial University of Peking. According to ARWU 2021, one of the three most influential world university rankings, Beijing Normal University is ranked 201st-300th globally and domestically, comparable to Georgetown University (U.S.) and Queen Mary University of London (U.K.). BNU is ranked 36th in the World's Universities with Real Impacts (WURI) Global Top 100 Innovative Universities Ranking 2021.
