Výskum je bádanie, skúmanie (obyčajne vedecké), v ktorom ide o poznanie doposiaľ nepoznaných skutočností na základe analýzy skutočností už známych. Vo vede sa zvykne rozlišovať základný výskum a aplikovaný výskum, experimentálny a teoretický, individuálny a tímový atď. Výskum je systematická tvorivá vedecká činnosť, ktorej cieľom je poznať príčiny a podmienky existencie konkrétnych prírodných a spoločenských javov. Výskum sa usiluje o poznanie skutočností doposiaľ nepoznaných na podklade analýzy skutočností už známych.
