Zhengzhou University (simplified Chinese: 郑州大学; traditional Chinese: 鄭州大學; pinyin: Zhèngzhōu Dàxué), colloquially known in Chinese as Zhèngdà (郑大) and abbreviated as ZZU is a public university located in Zhengzhou, Henan, People's Republic of China. Zhengzhou University is the largest university in China in terms of number of students (around 73,000 students). The Campus size is the tenth largest in PR China with 433 hectares (1,070 acres).Zhengzhou University was co-constructed by the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Government of Henan Province under the initiative of "One Province, One University". It has been recognized for receipt of huge development spending given its potential to become a reputed seat of higher learning. ZZU was included in "Project 211" by the Chinese Ministry of Education which aimed at transforming promising universities into "Key National Universities". The "Project 211" was later on replaced with a more ambitious and comprehensive initiative of tertiary education "World Double First-Class University Project" with an intent to develop elite Chinese universities and their individual disciplines as topmost institutions of the world by the end of 2050. ZZU is included in this project as well.As of September 2020, 7 disciplines of ZZU are ranked among top 1% globally: chemistry, materials sciences, clinical Medicine, engineering, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics. ZZU has been ranked among top 400 global universities by Academic Ranking of World Universities 2020, at 722 among best global universities by US News Ranking, 36 among China mainland universities by Wuhan University Ranking 2020. QS Top Universities 2020 has ranked it among 301-350 best universities of Asia and among 251-300 best global universities in the subject of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. ZZU is exhibiting a continuous upward trend on global rankings; its position was improved from 401-500 in 2019 to 301-400 in Academic Ranking of World Universities and from 794 in 2020 to 722 in 2021 by US News Ranking.
